Canadian wildfire smoke has thrown a wrench into the summer concert season — and country music wasn’t spared. With more than 800 active wildfires burning across Canada and smoke pouring into the northern United States, hazardous air quality forced a wave of cancellations and postponements across the Midwest and Northeast this week.
Here’s which country shows got hit, when they’ve been rescheduled, and how fans are taking it.
Hank Williams Jr. Postpones Two Michigan Shows
The biggest country casualty so far is Hank Williams Jr. Bocephus was set to play back-to-back Michigan dates this weekend, but both got moved out of an abundance of caution over the air quality.
His show at Pine Knob Music Theatre in Clarkston has been rescheduled to Thursday, August 13. The very next night’s show at Acrisure Amphitheater in Grand Rapids has been pushed to Friday, August 14. Both venues are outdoor, which made the call an easy one given the conditions.
The numbers back him up. At the time of the announcement, Clarkston’s Air Quality Index sat around 349 and Grand Rapids climbed past 420 — both squarely in the “hazardous” range, where health officials warn everyone can feel the effects.
The New Dates, and What Ticket Holders Should Know
If you had tickets to either Hank Jr. show, hang onto them. Both venues confirmed that all previously purchased tickets will be honored for the new August dates, with additional tickets also going on sale.

Acrisure Amphitheater (Grand Rapids, MI) — now Friday, August 14

Country Thunder Wisconsin Keeps a Close Watch
It’s not just individual shows. Country Thunder Wisconsin — one of the biggest country festivals of the summer — kicked off Thursday and runs through the weekend right in the thick of the smoke zone.
As of now the festival is still rolling, but organizers have been keeping attendees updated as officials monitor conditions hour by hour. If you’re heading out there, keep an eye on Country Thunder for the latest, and pack accordingly.
The Bigger Picture: A Rough Week for Live Music
Country acts are part of a much larger disruption. The same smoke forced postponements for Creed, who moved a Minnesota show to September 5, along with cancellations for Sebastian Bach, John Mellencamp, The Black Keys, and Mavis Staples across Wisconsin, Michigan, Illinois, and New York.
Health alerts went up in Chicago, Grand Rapids, Pittsburgh, Toledo, and New York City, where the skyline vanished into an orange haze. Detroit even ranked as the most polluted major city on the planet one morning this week. New York’s governor flatly told residents it was a serious health situation and not a good time to be outside.
How Fans Are Reacting
The reaction from country fans has followed a familiar pattern: real disappointment, but mostly understanding. Nobody wants to lose a Friday-night Hank Jr. show they’ve had circled for months — but breathing air equivalent to more than a dozen cigarettes a day isn’t anybody’s idea of a good concert.
The fact that both shows were cleanly rescheduled, with tickets honored, took a lot of the sting out of it. The bigger frustration online has been the uneven standards from venue to venue — some outdoor shows called it early on safety, while others in the same smoky cities pushed ahead, leaving fans wondering where the line actually is.
When Will It Clear Up?
There’s light at the end of the tunnel. Forecasters expect air quality to start improving from Monday, July 20, as shifting winds, a cold front, and rain help push the smoke out. That said, continued heat and dry conditions could keep things hazy through the weekend, so the situation is still fluid.
For a country calendar this packed, even a few smoky days can reshuffle a lot of plans. The good news: postponed doesn’t mean canceled, and the shows are simply moving down the road a few weeks.
